Announcing a net-zero target is easy. Delivering it is the hard part, and stakeholders, regulators, and customers are increasingly able to tell the difference. A credible roadmap turns ambition into an accountable plan.
1. Establish an honest baseline
You can't manage what you haven't measured. Start with a complete footprint across Scopes 1, 2, and 3, using consistent, standards-aligned methods.
2. Set science-based targets
Anchor your goals to what the science requires, not just what feels achievable. Break the long-term target into near-term milestones you can be held to.
3. Prioritise reduction over offsetting
The hierarchy matters: eliminate and reduce emissions first, then offset only what genuinely remains. Offsets are a complement to decarbonisation, never a substitute.
4. Cost and sequence your interventions
A roadmap should tell you not just what to do, but when and for how much. Sequencing high-impact, low-cost actions first builds momentum and frees up budget.
5. Report transparently
Publish your progress, including where you're behind. Transparency builds the trust that makes net-zero claims credible in the first place.
